February 6th, 2015 marks a significant date on the technological landscape of St. Croix and the entire USVI. Together with the University of the Virgin Islands (organized by UVIDEA) NEARiX proudly sponsored the first-ever territorial hackathon; bringing together brilliant minds of students and educators alike for shared days of developmental synergy. The event has since expanded in location and participation, now encompassing both St. Croix and St. Thomas UVI campuses.
Building upon the momentum of the inaugural event, NEARiX has continued to bolster its academic relationship with UVI through active participation in the planning and launch of Innovation Centers across both campuses. Serving as staging grounds for student imagination, the facilities aim to provide all the tools and environmental variables necessary for their continued success. The St. Croix Innovation Center, announced during the first Hackathon event, had its debut on March 4th and is already gaining notoriety for strides in 3D Printing!
The relationship between NEARiX, itself a proud product of the Virgin Islands, and UVI has strengthened the territory not only in regards to education but also professional growth. The momentum set by the initial Hackathons and Innovation Center projects will continue to build with many exciting events planned for the coming years. Leon Hughes, Founder and CEO couldn’t be more pleased with the opportunity to give back to St. Croix and all of the Virgin Islands in such a learned and hands-on capacity.
